I went viral?
Released new chrome extension 4 days ago and something weird happened...
Cursor Aura. It’s a chrome extension that adds a retro-styled circle around your mouse cursor.
I’ve always found that when I’m recording my screen it can be difficult for the viewer to follow the cursor so I decided to build this to make it super easy.
This is what the extension looks like:
I released it on the 26th of Jan 2026 and here’s the confusing part:
When I checked my stats I saw a massive spike for the day after launch.
91 users (?)
Then on the 28th I had 182 users!
My released my 1st chrome extension, Convert Time (convert time to local on hover), 5 months ago and only recently have I started to get people apart from me using it!
I get 1 to 2 installs every day and 5 weekly users.
So when I saw Cursor Aura’s jump I thought it had to be a bug, especially since i’d only done 1 post on threads so far to market it.
On top of all this the rest of the stats don’t match up:
On the 27th I had:
91 users, 6 installs and 16 impressions.
Then on the 28th:
182 users, 2 installs and 6 impressions!
Absolutely stumped I headed to r/chrome_extensions to see if this was a thing anyone had experienced before (thread).
One guy correctly guessed that the majority of users where Swedish (97% users from Sweden, 67% US installs) and said it was a known issue but with no known reason behind it.
Best guess is people using a VPN for Sweden.
One thing is clear - I’m no closer to solving this mystery… perhaps I really did just go viral!
